MAS ERP has a breaking point at 99,999.0001??

I had to throw this in my blog.  We are working on converting MAS 200 to Dynamics NAV.  I do not like putting down any ERP, and I fully believe that each ERP system has a place in the ERP flora (otherwise it would not sell), but I couldn’t help my self with this one.

In the middle of the project, the customer was running MAS and all of a sudden I see the purchasing department throw their hands up.  The IT director comes in running and realizes right away what is going on.  He instructs the entire company to go out of the ERP system while he goes in the background and works his magic.  A few minutes later he comes back to the purchaser and tells him, “It’s ok for you to put in a unit cost of more than 99 thousand.  Let me know when you are done.”

I almost fell of my chair.  Then the question of the hour was of course, does NAV support unit cost of more than 5 digits, but still allowing for 4 digit decimal.  I was stunned.  I had never even thought of that.  It was never really an issue.  So of course I typed it into NAV, and sure enough, I could process up to a trillion, which I figured was enough for a user even as demanding as the US Government.

Needless to say, the customer was happy with this demonstration.  I felt like I was pulled to the days of assembly programming for a while there, where I had to set the number of bits for the decimal I was computing and saving space by allowing just enough bits.  Those were good times, but not very productive.
